Paper Feathers
Paper, stitch and shadows exploring quiet and calm
Paper Feathers
My drawings and research explore the migratory journeys of the Bewick Swan as it returns each year from Northern Russia to the south-west of the UK.
During my time observing the swans at the WWT in Slimbridge, I realized that it is their feathers that beguile and captivate me and have inspired this body of work.
Feathers, Shield. Hand stitched paper textile. The intrigue of translucency and ever changing shadows offer a dimension that is far beyond the handwork of the artist creating with paper and stitch. A double ring of 300 paper feathers containing their own history. Each has been cut-out, curled, folded, hand-stitched and knotted onto their own individual place. Making requires time, care, precision, quiet, rhythm, repetition. Repetition is imbued within - each stitch - a prayer. A meditation aiding a track to unknowing, an embrace with the divine. A breath of God opening the mind to Beauty, the presence of the Beloved, which sees reality as it is, and the Reality beyond it. Cloud of Witnessses £895.00 .
